Monsoon is approaching and we would like to share with you tips on roof maintenance during the rain. A roof that leaks is a problem in any weather, but a roof that suddenly begins to leak during a heavy rain can quickly turn into an emergency. If you see water spots on your ceiling or walls, chances are you have a leaking roof. The best way to deal with water damage is to stop it before it starts. Here are measures that you can take to prevent water from entering your home from outside.
INSPECT YOUR ROOF
Ensure that all your roofing is properly secured to the roof’s frame using the correct amount and type of fasteners. Inspect the roof from the ground, look for signs of damage, sagging and aging. Check the valleys of your roof (the area of your roof with a downward slope). Make sure that any flashing does not have any holes or rusty spots in it.
MAINTAIN YOUR GUTTERS
Keep the gutters clean. One of the most common causes of roof leaks is clogged gutters as this can cause the water to build up during rain. So clean the gutters and downspouts regularly and check for breaks or gaps in the seams and make certain that the brackets holding the gutters against the house are securely attached.
SURROUNDING TREES AND FOLIAGE
Trim trees in the surrounding area. Ensure there are no overhanging branches that can break off and puncture your roof during inclement weather.
SCHEDULE A PROFESSIONAL ROOF INSPECTION
A professional roofer/fabricator will be able to identify points of vulnerability that may otherwise be overlooked by untrained eyes. Schedule an appointment with your local roofer before the monsoon to be extra sure.
If you find any signs of water leakage, contact a reputed fabricator as soon as possible, in order to avoid moisture leaks inside your home that can weaken your wall or ceilings.
